Notebook 8.7: Weight watcher
Standing around in the white lunch room talking about losing weight and food that equals points, food that equals zero points and how great those foods are. You have 12 points for the day – he can eat no more than that. He pats his stomach then rubs it in a circular motion. All the foods he eats in the day equal a certain amount of points. A fast food burger is 12 points. If you have one of those you can’t eat anything for the rest of the day. Nothing. Some fast food burgers equal more than 12 points. If you have one you can’t eat anything else today and only some things tomorrow. Some days are zero point days. Smiles, plays with the tip of his black tie with white stripes and white flower motifs. He only drinks water – zero points – and only eats salads and certain vegetables – zero points. If he wants a snack, he just has a carrot. It’s all right because he likes rabbit food, it’s good. You don’t see any fat rabbits. Do you? Smiles and shows his teeth. You don’t need to go to the meetings, all you need is the book. He talks about motivation and TV shows and ads and what his friends are doing. They’re unhealthy and they don’t care and their kids are going to suffer. In the long run, they will. He has lost 20 kilograms – 21.8 at last measurement, to be exact – and you guys should start. It’s easy. You just have to stick at it like him – he can stick at it because he wants it. It’s not hard on him. Most people don’t really want it. He wants to make his life better. He’s startlingly self-confident. You should see his energy now, the kids love it. It’s the way he talks. He departs with a joke.
