Television

More or Less part IV

There is nothing on. Of course, there are things on – when nobody at all is awake to watch there are still things, images, on the screen if the television is turned ‘ON’. I mean nothing I am interested in is on. This annoys me greatly – my night depends on it, on something good being on. I leave the television, the screen, the sound on but I do not like what I see. I search the channels, hoping I will become attached to something. I change the channel from where I am sitting using the remote. It is hard in my hand. Not ergonomic. I don’t know what most of the buttons do. The red one – the ‘ON/OFF’ button – I use, the up and down CH and VOL buttons I use. The others have no use as far as I’m concerned.

I watch television more or less alone. Of course, I alone am not watching – millions watch from where they are. I mean that in my household only I watch. My wife reads, still in the living room with me, on the lounge or at the table. She looks up from her book when something breaks through her attention. Often it is an advertisement, the volume suddenly louder, the imagery suddenly wilder, livelier.

A man speaks at me, smiles, points. Soon, the show ends, there are commercials, a new show begins. I do not like this one so I search the other channels to see if other new shows have begun. A news program has just started – it has nothing new to share, I know it all. There is nothing on so I push the red button, the screen goes blank like death and I put the remote down. I look at the time on my watch.
